Camp Mission

The goal of Woodwind Camp is to make significant contributions to students' musical development while also cultivating their enjoyment of music.  Students are mentored by a faculty of outstanding professional musicians, who work hard all week to encourage and inspire developing musicians.  Students who have attended Woodwind Camp have gone on to participate in the WMEA State Solo & Ensemble Contest, WMEA All-State and All-Northwest Bands & Orchestras, and other competitions.  Additionally, alumni have been offered full tuition scholarships at universities with prestigious music programs.

The only camp of its kind in the United States, Woodwind Camp offers a broad musical curriculum designed to enage and challenge students.  The active, fast-paced learning environment is lively and enjoyable.  Specialized classes are offered, including reed making for oboists and bassoonists five days a week.

Junior Camp is recommended for students entering grades 5-9, and Senior Camp for students entering grades 9-12.  Students have the option of attending both camps, an excellent idea for 8th and 9th graders with strong musical skills.  Attending two weeks of camp gives advanced younger students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills as section leaders at Junior Camp and be challenged at Senior Camp.  5th and 6th graders attending camp for the first time will benefit most if they have at least 6 months playing experience on their instrument.

Camp Life

Camp begins at 8:30 with wind ensemble rehearsal followed by classes in chamber music, music theory, rhythm, composition, reed making, and advanced ensemble that rotate throughout the week.  Participants have daily sectionals with their main instructor.  A unique feature of this camp is that students interact closely with faculty members, enabling developing musicians to observe and to be inspired by the outstanding faculty.  Fun is not forgotten as musical games delight and interest young musicians.  Camp adjourns at 2:30 pm.  Friday’s final concert is not to be missed!

I would like to extend a warm invitation to you to participate in the 2012 Woodwind Camp!  Come play great music and make new friends!

What Students & Parents Say About Woodwind Camp

I liked the Muppets because the bassoons sounded great!

I liked the Theory Class because I improved a lot!

I enjoyed all of the pieces of music.  (It was nearly impossible to pick a favorite!)  I learned a ton!!  Thanks again for such a great time!!!

I was very impressed with the choices of music. I find it rare that kids get to play music that has non-traditional harmonies & I LOVE it!

This camp does a great job of challenging students without discouraging them.  It builds basic skills for less accomplished musicians and leadership skills for those who have progressed further.

Over the past 5 years you've contributed significantly to my son's growth as a musician.

I enjoyed hearing the student compositions. It was a great twist having them played professionally. Very impressive.
